Welcome to Mrs. Kane's Website!

ELA - Math

This site will give you an overview of what we are working on in ELA and Math.  Since ELA and Math are co-taught classes, you will find up to date information and homework assignments on Mrs. Janik's site for ELA and Mr. Smith's for Math site.

ELA with Mrs. Kane and Mrs. Janik

We are beginning the year with our Author Study.  Our author is Roald Dahl! Students will be learning about the elements of literary tests, as well as how to cite text as evidence.

Home Reading Students will have 20 minutes of Home Reading every Monday through Thursday.  Please discuss with them what they have read.  Your child is asked to complete four written assignments on their Home Reading Log. Parents are asked to sign the bottom of the Log every Thursday and students are to return them to school every Friday for homework credit, unless otherwise stated in their planners. One assignment a week will be chosen, by us, as a "Response to Literature" grade.

Leveled Readers Link   :  Novels/books are listed by grade levels with a short book description and author information.

Leveled Readers Link 2 : Lists of books by grade level.

Frye Word List:  This is a comprehensive list of basic sight words.  The first 300 make up 65% of all written material contained in newspaper articles, magazines, textbooks, children's stories and novels.

****If you complete homework and have difficulty printing your assignments, please bring it to school on a flash drive or e-mail it to me as an attachment at: kanej@portsmouthschoolsri.org   ****

** See Mrs. Janik's site for additional information and links.**

Math with Mrs. Kane and Mr. Smith

In 5th grade, we will be using a math program entitled enVision Math, which uses the Common Core to guide the instruction. Math homework should be expected on a daily basis.  As in all classes, the work will be differentiated.

** See Mr. Smith's site for additional information and links.**

*Reminder* - Student planners are used to teach organizational skills and responsibility.  The planner is your best guide when looking for assignments and due dates.

The planners are also used as a communication tool between home and school.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding homework, please don't hesitate to jot it in the planner and I will respond in kind.

If you have a question or concern that you would rather not write in the planner, please don't hesitate to contact me.
