*A heartfelt thank you to PPEF for the wonderful grant they bestowed upon me.  This grant will allow the students to meet professional authors who will come to our school and discuss their craft.




Week of November 2nd:  This week we will begin the Short Story Unit.  We will focus on the short story, "The Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe and how Poe's word choice creates the suspenseful mood in the selection.

Week of November 9th:  This week we will be working with the selection, "The Lady or the Tiger?" by Frank R. Stockton.  We will be focusing on internal conflicts and resolution.


Due 11/10:  "The Lady or the Tiger?" vocabulary worksheet

Due 11/12:  "The Lady or the Tiger?":  Finish reading the selection and complete the packet

Week 11 Test                                                                                                                                       Week of November 16th:  This week we will be working on the selection, "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant. We will be focusing on the exposition, inciting incident and writing an argument to support a claim.  The argument will be written entirely in class.

Due 11/20:  "The Necklace" Argument graphic organizer completed for Reason 1+2 with text support

Due 11/23:  "The Necklace" Argument Rough Draft: Introduction, Support Paragraphs 2+3 (reason, text support, analysis), Counterclaim Paragraph (counterclaim, refutation)

Week of November 23rd:  Monday and Tuesday will be spent wrapping up "The Necklace" arugment.

Week of November 30th:  This week we will be working on the selection, "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  We will focus on the reading strategy of summarizing.


Due 12/8:  "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" test; Sherlock Holmes Bio-Poem; Reading Evidence Checkpoint #2

Week of December 7th:  This week we will be working on the selection, "The Third Wish" by Joan Aiken.  We will be focusing on fairy tale motifs.

Due 12/13:  Open Book Test on "The Third Wish"

Week of December 14th:  This week we will be working on the selection, "The Long Winter" by Walter Havighurst.  We will be focusing on the internal and external conflicts in the story.
