Weekly ELA Update: 12/14

Good Morning,

This week we will be reading a couple of short, nonfiction pieces in class so that we can model and practice the active reading strategies that are required in the December Read-and-Rate assignment. We will be reading an excerpt from Roald Dahl's autobiography and an excerpt from Robert Ballard's Exploring the Titanic

We will also be discussing the difference between prose and verse. Since January is national poetry month, the Read-and-Rate for that month will be poetry. Students can choose from reading and analyzing five poems from the literature book, or they can read a novel in verse. The novels in verse can be found at most public libraries or we can order copies through Scholastic/Amazon. We will be placing an order for those novels next week so that they will arrive by the time we get back from the holiday break. We have attached the list of those novels to this page.

Just a couple of reminders:

  • The final draft of the theater review is due tomorrow!
  • Chatback due Thursday (Taking notes on mood, tone, and setting in the literature textbook pages 518-521. This can be done with the organizer given out in class or on a lined sheet of paper.)
  • Capitalization homework due Friday
  • Extra credit due by January 5th. (Read the original version of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and then make a list of scenes that Trinity Rep. chose to leave out of their version. I gave out some texts to students during literacy on Friday, but I did not have enough for all. The the original text is for sale through Scholastic for $1 or there is a link to the full text on my website).

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Have a nice week,
