4/05/14 > Robot Block Party - April 5, 11AM - 4PM at the Pizzitola Center, Brown University
On April 5th an event called "Robot Block Party" will be held at the Pizzitola Center at Brown University in Providence. This is an excellent opportunity for high school students, college students and professionals to network with people who work in robotics and related fields, whether in research, manufacturing, or education.

There will be over 50 exhibitors from the industry, universities as well as community organizations and K-12 schools participating. Displays will include robots that work underwater, with humans, in manufacturing and in space. It's going to be a great event with a mix of displays and hands-on activities.

Portsmouth High School will host the PSAT on Saturday October 19, 2013 from 7:30 A.M. – 10:30 A.M. Sign-ups will begin on Wednesday September 4 and run through Friday October 11 in the PHS Guidance Office with Mrs. Krupa. The cost is $20. Checks should be made payable to Portsmouth High School. All grade 10 and 11 students of Portsmouth High School are invited to sign up. If, after October 11, openings to sign up for the test remain, PHS will re-open sign-ups on a first come, first serve basis. Please be advised that a limited number of testing slots are available to students.

The North Kingstown Guidance Department proudly invites high school aged students AND their parents to attend our 6th Annual Post High School Planning Night on Wednesday, March 27th from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. This is an opportunity for high school students of ALL ages to begin their planning process for life after high school. There will be a large scale “fair” in the Lenore Cranston Gymnasium of over 50 different colleges, military branches, an NCAA compliance officer, vocational outlets, and community professionals. This evening also serves to be the “Official Kick-Off” for junior students and parents as they begin the college application journey. Guidance Counselors will begin with a presentation about where students should be, and what steps need to be taken in the next six months to prepare for the application process.

1/16/13 > Grade 8 Parents Night - 7PM at the Portsmouth High School Auditorium
This event will include a presentation of course offerings and an overview of how to begin the enrollment process for prospective grade 9 students for 2013-14. Representatives from all the Departments at PHS will be present to answer individual questions.

Portsmouth Middle School will receive course recommendations on February 1. On that day, PHS Counselors will be visiting to explain the process of choosing electives and discuss how to prepare for the transition. PMS will expect that students bring course selection sheets home over the weekend to select electives and review recommendations with parents. Parents need to sign completed course selection sheets and have the returned on February 4-6.

Little Compton- PHS Counselors visited Wilbur McMahon School on January 8 to explain the process of choosing electives and discuss how to prepare for the transition. Grade 8 students need to bring completed, signed course selection sheets to Wilbur by February 1.

Students New to Portsmouth Public Schools-Make an appointment to register at the Administration Building. You can make an appointment online. Go to http://portsmouthschoolsri.net and click on the parent link at the top. Click on registration to make an appointment. When you register, you'll receive course selection materials and information on how to proceed.

1/11/13 > Course Selection is Underway for 2013-14
At Portsmouth High School, we have held an assembly for 9th, 10th and 11th grade students to prepare them to request courses for the 2013-14 academic year. Students were given course selection sheets and a list of propsosed course offerings for next year. Copies of these items are attached to this message along with a link to the Program of Studies (below). Use the form that reflect the grade the student will be in next year (9th graders complete the Grade 10 Course Selection Sheet, for example).

Course Selection Sheets need to be completed by Friday January 25. Instructions are on Course Selection Sheets. Counselors will meet with students in the Library during the week of January 28. Between now and January 25, students need to have their teachers recommend them for courses in English, math, social studies, science and modern world language for next year by signing the Course Selection Sheet. If a teacher does not feel comfortable recommending a student for a particular course, a student and his/her parents may choose to request the course if the student's parent completes an override form. These forms can be obtained in the Guidance Office. If you have any quesitons contact the Guidance Department at 683-2139.

12/10/12 > PSAT Results to be Distributed
PSAT results will be distributed to students during Advisory this week. Please click on the link below, which contains a step-by-step "How to Interpret PSAT Scores" guide. PSAT scores will give a student a great starting point for college and post-secondary planning. www.collegeboard.com has tools for students to explore possibilities beyond high school, free of charge. The PSAT score report that each test taker receives will give valuable information about strengths and areas in need of improvement. Please review your results and reach out to your school counselor if you have any questions.

Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) will be at PHS for “On the Spot College Acceptance Day” Monday, April 2th. Please sign up for an appointment in the Guidance Office with Mrs. Krupa no later than Thursday, March 29th. Students will need to bring in a signed transcript request card (which will be given to you when you sign up) by Friday, March 30th. In addition, students must bring their completed CCRI application (applications are available in the Guidance Office) and a check made payable to the Community College of Rhode Island for $20.00 to their appointment.

This is a presentation led by financial planner and parent of two recent Portsmouth High School graduates, Bill Geasey. It is ideal for juniors and their parents but is quite relevant to families with students in grades 8-11.

2/09/12 > Senior Mid-Year Grades to be sent to Colleges upon request
Senior Parents:
If your child has applied to any colleges, today s/he will be receiving a slip for requesting that mid-year grades be sent to the colleges in Advisory. The slip will have a list of the schools s/he has applied to and that PHS has been instructed to send transcripts, school reports and teacher recommendations to by you and your child. S/he simply needs to circle “yes” or “no” next to each corresponding school to indicate whether or not mid-year grades should be sent. PHS will begin mailing grades on Monday February 14 and we would like to have slips completed and returned to Mrs. Krupa in guidance as soon as possible. Ideally, if the slip is returned tomorrow, Friday February 10, mid-year grades will be sent prior to vacation. Thank you.

The Guidance Department is meeting with Juniors during Learning Centers to work on the post-secondary planning process. We have attached links to the PRE AND POST-ASSESSMENTS as well as the lesson plan to this event listing. Students who were absent from Learning Center the day Counselors visited and those who do not carry a Learning Center on their schedules can refer to the attached materials. Counselors will follow up with all juniors individually during the weeks to follow.

1/13/12 > Course Selection for 2012-13 is Underway
Course Selection Process for 2012-13:

Here are some important dates pertaining to course selection. The attached documents were given to students at assemblies on Jan. 10-11. The grade level pertains to the grade a student will be entering next school year. There is a list of course offerings attached but the complete Program of Studies can be found on the Portsmouth High School Home Page. The attached documents will also be available on the PHS web site in the Guidance Dept. Page.

Jan. 10 – 20: Students will select electives and consult English, math, social studies and science teachers about course recommendations
Jan. 23 - 26: Students will meet with their counselors to enter course selections into computer and to review recommendations
Feb. 3- 10: Students will receive a copy of selections/recommendations to review with their parents/guardians. Parents/guardians need to sign and students need to return the signed document to their advisors

In May: New Year’s Days - We will revisit selected courses and recommendations for finalization. Student progress may lead to changes in recommendations and scheduling conflicts may require students to make choices between courses that conflict with one another.

In early August: Final schedules will be available to students and the guidance office will be open for support with conflict resolution prior to the start of school.
